Over the past two years, the rate of people who die in a given year has been steadily increasing. This means that the rate of excess mortality—the number of people who weren’t forecasted to die, but did—has been spiking. However, just a few days ago, there was another development—another data point that we can add to the growing body of knowledge surrounding this spike in excess mortality. This new data point came from the quarterly earnings report of Service Corporation International (SCI), the largest for-profit funeral operator in North America. According to SCI’s earnings call, it had another great fiscal quarter.
