Bruce's Beach was a beach resort in the city of Manhattan Beach (in Los Angeles County, California), that was owned by and operated for African Americans. It provided the African American community with opportunities unavailable at other beach areas because of racial segregation. In 1912, Willa Bruce purchased for $1,225 the first of two lots in Manhattan Beach, and with her husband would eventually build the first west coast resort for black people. The property was acquired by the city via eminent domain proceedings in 1924 and closed down. The Governor of California recently signed a bill allowing the land to be returned to the family. In this episode, I discuss this game changing event and the history of Bruce's Beach. Access all of our resources on our website- https://www.blackrealestatedialogue.com/linksJoin the B.R.E.D.
